We roast and serve coffees that we think taste great. Our offerings change throughout the year, depending on what's in season and what we think will work for the consumer . We buy and roast in small batches to ensure we bring out the best qualities in every lot.
At our espresso bar, we are able to roast small highly controlled batches of coffee. The people roasting the coffee are the same people pulling shots and serving the coffee to the customers. This connection with the roasting process has enabled us to fine tune our roasts over the last nine years.
We are a specialty coffee roastery (formerly known as Barista Empire) based in Auckland, New Zealand. Founded by award-winning professional Barista Ben Boyle in 2006 after returning home from a stint on the Melbourne cafe scene, Barista Empire started off with humble beginnings as an eponymous small inner-city espresso bar on Fort Street with one of the country’s first Synesso espresso machines, which was soon followed by a 3kg Diedrich IR Roaster installed in the corner of the cafe. With Ben at the helm of the Synesso everyday and roasting all our own coffee in-house, it wasn’t long before the reputation of the coffee served at Ben Cafe had grown to be one the city’s best – with throngs of inner-city workers queuing up every morning for their coffee fix a testament to that.
Disenchanted with the plethora of poor-quality commodity coffee on offer at most cafes in the city at the time, Ben set out to be able to offer his customers something different and introduce them to the world of specialty coffee. Ben Cafe was one of the first in the city to begin offering specialty single origins daily on the espresso machine as well as one of the first to offer the alternative brew method of the syphon filter and cold drip brew to his customers back in 2009. Since then, we have never looked back and Barista Empire has grown to be a small but dedicated team of passionate Baristas, Roasters and all-round Coffee Lovers alike, who are keen to bring the craft of specialty coffee to the public.
In 2013 Barista Empire became known as Be.specialty, to reflect not a shift, but more an expansion of our focus in the coffee industry to not just include the brewing end of the equation (the Barista and the machinery), but also the beans themselves – from the growers at origin to the processing method and roasting process at our very own roastery - from bean to cup.
Speciality coffee is defined as a crafted quality coffee-based beverage, which is judged by the consumer (in a limited marketplace at a given time) to have a unique quality, a distinct taste and personality different from, and superior to, the common coffee beverages offered. The beverage is based on beans that have been grown in an accurately defined area, and which meet the highest standards for green coffee and for its roasting, storage and brewing.
